This year’s Global Children’s Challenge will be host to 100,000 primary school children from over 80 countries around the world, all walking their way to a healthier future. Starting on the 29th September 2010 and running for 8 weeks (until the 17th November 2010), children will record their daily activity levels using a GCC pedometer (provided to the classes at no cost). Working together as a class, their total steps are combined, converted to kms, and plotted along their virtual journey around the world. Teachers and Children can track their daily progress around the world on the GCC award winning website – www.gccjunior.org. The more active the class, the further they will progress, learning about different countries, cities and cultures along the way. Not only is this a fantastic initiative to get children more active but it is also a great resource to support their curriculum.
To ensure you have more information on the challenge, please find attached a flyer about the event and a link directly through to our website. You can also download a short guide to the event from the following link: http://www.gccjunior.org/content/static/doc/Teachers_Guide.pdf or find out more by simply visiting www.gccjunior.org.
The Global Children’s Challenge is run absolutely free of charge and is supported by some of the UK’s largest businesses including Tesco, British Gas, Unilever, AstraZeneca and Balfour Beatty. As you can imagine, due to participation being free of charge, we are experiencing a high number of applications from primary schools. We have however decided to keep UK school applications open longer to ensure that we can support as many UK primary schools as possible.
If you would like to get schools in your locale involved, all they need to do is complete the short application form online at www.gccjunior.org. As we are approving school places on a first come first served basis we would recommend completing the application form early to avoid disappointment. The Global Children’s Challenge is open to Years 4, 5 & 6 (ages 8 to 12) so we would encourage applications for all of these classes within each school as this can help generate a healthy level of competition between the classes to “be the most active”.
Each application is reviewed within a matter of days and confirmation emails are sent directly via email. We will then keep in touch with each teacher in the run up to and during the event offering useful tips and information to keep their class motivated and eager to get active!
