The founders, an economist, a headteacher and a former government adviser, say that though the UK has become wealthier, levels of happiness have not risen. The movement's members will commit themselves to trying to produce more happiness in the world and less misery.

The headteacher, Dr Anthony Seldon, has already introduced happiness classes for students aged 14 to 16 at Wellington College. They include sessions on managing anger, resolving conflict, meditating, being grateful, saying thank you and managing the subconscious mind.

In a recent UN survey on children's well-being, the US and the UK were ranked bottom among rich countries.
