The programme in Nottingham involves work with schools and targeted input for young people to raise aspirations and involvement in positive activities eg. work experience and training, song writing, community work etc.
Following presentations to both our team and to primary school teachers at the annual PSHE Conference, the Northamptonshire Healthy Schools Programme has funded a pilot scheme to enable Clayton to extend his PSHE project, "Done With It" into our county so that our pupils may also benefit from his very important message.
During the pilot phase, lessons have been carried out by Clayton and an ex gang-member with children from Years 5-10 in 7 schools across the county where they have been very favourably received. Feedback so far has been very positive - "the children were completely absorbed in what you had to say and I could see that the message was really hitting home. Thanks again to you and your colleague - the work you are doing is fantastic and will, I'm sure, change the course of many lives for the better". When Year 6 pupils were asked "What did you think could have been improved?" one replied "Nothing because it was all amazing". Formal evaluation is now underway.
The hope is that, during the next phase, the programme can be further developed and rolled out to increased numbers of schools.
