Introduction to Enhancement Model

Welcome to these pages on enhancement which will guide you through the planning tools, resources and support provided for the enhancement model.

Pilot Schools
The first 12 schools in the county to undertake the enhancement model have agreed to be pilot schools to share their ideas and experiences of enhancement with other schools in their clusters. They have developed the first action plans to enhance the health and wellbeing of their children and young people, as part of the new Healthy Schools Enhancement Model.

All of the schools have devised future plans to make their schools even happier and healthier environments for pupils and staff.

Schools are basing their work on a number of local and school health and wellbeing priorities, ranging from tackling childhood obesity to enhancing emotional wellbeing.

They will be working on a variety of projects including promoting positive behaviour at break times, running Family SEAL sessions, embedding emotional wellbeing, working on the Anti-Bullying Accreditation Programme, encouraging healthy eating and cookery and improving the self esteem of vulnerable children.

What is the Enhancement Model?
The Healthy Schools enhancement model has been designed to help schools develop the wider thinking and planning they will need to do in order to achieve better outcomes around health and well-being for children and young people. It has also been designed to help schools to strive for lasting health and well-being behaviour changes in children and young people, with particular focus on providing targeted support for those who are most at risk.

Schools work closely with key partners towards achieving locally agreed health and well-being outcomes. This reflects school-based local and national priorities as outlined in the Local Area Agreements, Children and Young People’s Plans and PCT operational plans. The enhancement model provides schools with rigorous health and well-being evidence for schools improvements plans and the Ofsted self-evaluation form (SEF).

The health and well-being improvement tool (HWIT) helps schools to plan and record work as part of the Healthy Schools enhancement model. It provides a series of questions for each stage of the enhancement model which act as prompts.

Further information on enhancement can be found in the Healthy Schools Toolkit
It is also available to complete as a word document that can be obtained from your Healthy Schools Advisor or downloaded from here:

HWIT Stages 1-3 (Word document)
HWIT Stage 4 (Word document)

Its main purpose is to enable schools to keep a record of the work undertaken as they progress through the stages of the enhancement model. Where there are links with the requirements of the SEF this is highlighted throughout the HWIT. On completion of the HWIT at stage 4b, schools submit it to their Advisor for the local quality assurance system.

Support resources for the enhancement model can be found in the resources section.
