Welcome to the Good Practice pages for Healthy Early Years. Here you will find examples from our original pilot project which took place in 2009/10. Further good practice examples will be added as more settings complete the scheme.

Main Qualitative Outcomes for Pilot Settings:

Titchmarsh ABC Pre-School

  • A suggestion tree for children and box for parents is available. The setting nurtures positive relationships with children, parents and the local community through many joint activities.
  • Children help in the growing and preparation of food to eat for snack time, eg, salad for pitta bread snacks.
  • The setting has developed an imaginative and varied snack menu, clearly displayed for parents to see.
  • The pre-school provides an excellent range of physical activities both inside and out.

Ronald Tree Nursery & Surestart Children’s Centre

  • The nursery has developed clear, detailed monitoring of learning and development and wellbeing and involvement levels.
  • Children can all experience ‘Circle time’ with their key worker.
  • The setting takes good account of allergies and ethnic foods and parent’s expertise in cookery is shared with children.
  • A wide range of healthy activities are available through the children’s centre for parents and children such as “Wiggle & Jiggle”, community walks and healthy eating workshops.

1st Class Day Nursery

  • The setting has developed an excellent fruit & vegetable garden where children have the opportunity to plant, nurture and harvest a wide variety of produce.
  • The nursery builds good relationships with parents through consultation and involvement in activities e.g. policies, a healthy cookbook and themed health walks.
  • The setting uses movement charts to monitor outdoor play and levels of physical activity.
  • The setting encourages families to walk, cycle and scooter to nursery, with space for bike and scooter storage provided.

Barney’s Day Nursery

  • The setting has developed excellent relationships with parents through consultation, sharing information and family events such as the annual sports day and growing food.
  • A range of training opportunities have been made available to staff to enhance the physical and emotional environment.
  • The food provided in the nursery shows good examples of healthy choices throughout the day.
  • The setting have taken part in the Forest Schools initiative to provide a range of learning experiences and to enhance wellbeing .
